Back in 2016, City of Parramatta Council asked the question ‘how can Ermington be a more vibrant and liveable place?’ Over 150 ideas, from footpaths to bubblers, were submitted and the winning idea from this Imagine Ermington’ initiative was a community garden. The garden was built at the end of 2017 in Bruce Miller Reserve, following a number of community consultations and workshops. And now the garden is an exciting blank canvas, ready to be brought to life!

Marcela Ordonez, and her daughter Chelsy, were the ones who suggested a community garden. They hoped it would help build a sense of community – bringing locals together around food at the source. And from the beginning it has been a community effort, with lots of locals helping out wherever they could.

Community gardens come in all shapes and sizes. What is special about this one is that you don’t have to garden to be part of the garden. It is there for everyone to enjoy and help out where they can. The most important thing is that it is a vibrant, living space to connect locals.

Sounds awesome right!?! Then head down for a visit, join the Bruce Miller Reserve Garden Club Facebook group and donate your time or some gardening items. The ParraParents team have already been helping out in the garden with our kids and had great fun, though melted in this heat!

Donations Needed

The Bruce Miller Reserve Community Garden is for the local community, by the local community. Council has built a great foundation but all materials needed to grow and maintain the garden must be sourced by the local community. And this is where you can help!

Do you happen to have any gardening items lying around that you no longer need? Or would you be happy to donate something for use in the garden? This really is a great opportunity to create a special community space in Ermington and we would love your support to do that.

Items needed include:

  • Shade sails
  • Compost/ manure
  • Shelving unit for the shed
  • Good quality seedling potting mix
  • Children’s wheelbarrows
  • Tripod sprinkler

Official Opening of the Community Garden

The Lord Mayor of the City of Parramatta officially opened the community garden on Friday 12th January 2018. There was live music, a wonderful welcome to country, the Active Parramatta Van with sports and games and a compositing workshop. Plus a little lemonade and cake stand that raised money for the garden.
