Over the last decade, Men’s Sheds have become a common sight in Australia. They have provided men with a space to tinker on projects and bond with other men. Now Women’s Sheds are slowly starting to pop up, with one of the first in Australia opening in Parramatta in April this year.
The Parramatta Women’s Shed is a partnership between Supporting and Linking Tradeswomen (SALT) and The Bower, with support from the City of Parramatta Council. It provides women with a safe and supportive space to learn skills they are unlikely to have learnt growing up. Think hanging pictures, using power tools, doing basic plumbing and carpentry.
At the same time as empowering women, The Bower and SALT hope to build a community. The aim is have the Women’s Shed evolve into a self-run community of women, working on DIY, upcycling and repair projects in The Bowers workshop space in Parramatta.
And what is extra special about this Women’s Shed is that it’s a sustainable one. With only recycled building materials and second hand tools used. So it’s great for the community and the environment.
“We are totally committed to changing what women think they can do and what society thinks women can do” SALT’s President, Fi Shewring
