Northam Drive ReserveLocated in a quiet suburban street and nestled near houses, this small playground backs onto bushland. The metal gate at the rear holds a great little secret if you are feeling adventurous…..

The playground is on Northam Drive, between the cross streets of Sandler Avenue and Corunna Avenue. It is framed by large sandstone blocks that my kids loved balancing along. There is dirt bark underfoot and a clump of large rocks in the middle of the play area.

The main feature of the play equipment is a small climbing tower. It has spiral steps, a climbing rope, a steering wheel and a slide. And a circle peephole and ‘shop’ underneath. The colours of dark woods and greens suit the bushland background.

You’ll also find a set of swings (one toddler), a large sandstone frog, a rocker, a spinner and two bench seats. The large trees nearby create lots of natural shade.

And the secret? Well if you are feeling adventurous you can go through the metal gate, down a steep embankment and across the river. Where you will find yourself on the Hunts Creek bushwalking track that leads to Balaka Falls.

Balaka Falls Hunts Creek Reserve

The little downhill trek from the playground (approx 30 metres) is quite steep and you cross the (3 metre wide) river by balancing across rocks. We went on a fine clear day and found it quite easy but it would depend upon conditions how safe it is to cross. Once on the other side, the bushwalking track is a wide concrete two way path that is shared by cyclists and walkers.

The river crossing delivers you between Stratham Avenue and Northam Drive. About 50 metres in from Northam drive. It’s slightly confusing as that is the same road that the playground is on. But easily explained – the road is a large loop. To walk to Balaka Falls, go left up to Northam Drive and then turn left again. Walk up the hill a bit and then cross the road. You will find the Hunts Creek walking track again, though there isn’t any signage here. Follow the track in and you will see markers pointing you to the falls.

This walk is very well shaded and there are lots of gorgeous large trees to admire and rocks to sit on. Read more about bushwalking in Hunts Creek Reserve here.

The lovely little playground at Northam Drive is definitely worth the visit for bush loving preschoolers!

Finding Northam Drive Reserve

This playground is on Northam Drive in North Rocks. There is no signage but have been told by Council that is is part of Hunts Creek Reserve (west). This area used to be within the Hills Shire Council until the boundary changes last year. And the playground was upgraded either just before those changes.

There is street parking but no easy way to access the playground by public transport.
