ANZAC Day on 25th April marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand armed forces during the First World War. The importance of Anzac Day does though go beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli. It is a day to reflect on the sacrifices made by service women and men of both Australia and New Zealand who have participated and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations and to send our thanks to those currently in service.

ANZAC Day Parramatta

2018 marks the final year commemorating the Centenary of Anzac and focuses on the Battle of Hamel that took place in northern France 100 years ago. Australian soldiers launched a successful offensive on the German line in a key battle lasting 93 minutes. The innovative military tactics used in the Battle of Hamel lead the Allies to later victories, bringing WW1 to an end on 11 November 1918.

There are also a number of other ANZAC Day services nearby, including at:

2School Holidays Craft Workshops – 16th to 27th April

Bring the kids down to Centenary Square on weekdays from 10am to 1pm to make a red poppy. You can then add it to the Parramatta River of Poppies on the Memorial Gates at Centenary Square. And in support of the Invictus Games, you can make a yellow poppy to honour the servicemen and women who will compete in Sydney this October.

There is also an opportunity to make a postcard and write your own message to send home from the front-line.
