From a twinkle in the eye of planners in 1968, Western Sydney Parklands has been providing open space and infrastructure for communities in Western Sydney. Did you know that the Parklands is 27 kilometres from north to south? Within the massive 5280 hectares of Western Sydney Parklands, there is everything from playgrounds to sports facilities, bike tracks, nature trails and huge entertainment facilities. To celebrate its 50 years in the making, Sydney’s Biggest Backyard is going ‘On Show’ from Friday 20th July to Saturday 4th August. There’s a jam-packed program of free events and special offers to help you explore all Western Sydney Parklands has to offer.


Free Events

To kick off the celebrations, there’s a one-day festival of all that is great and alive in Western Sydney Parklands on Saturday July 21st at Bungarribee Park from 10am to 2pm.

The showcase event will include:

  • meeting some of Sydney Zoo’s possums, joeys and native reptiles from 10am to 12pm.
  • planting trees with Bringing Back the Bush experts, Greening Australia.
  • taking your much loved pooch on a guided 2km dog walk from 10am to 12pm (registration required and the registration fee of $8 will be donated to Pet Stock Assist).
  • enjoying great tucker from the bush and the street.
  • hanging with a bunch of BMX bandits.
  • checking out a Sydney Motorsports Park safety car.
  • having fun at a throwback from Happy Days and much, much more.

There will be food trucks at the event, plus there are lots of BBQs and picnic spots at Bungarribee Park.

2Dawn Patrol at Sydney Motorsport Park | Friday 20th July

Joining in the celebrations, Sydney Motorsport Park will open its gates for people to take the family car on a free ‘dawn patrol’ around the iconic circuit. The Western Sydney Parklands Dawn Patrol is specifically designed to give drivers a taste of the fantastic Sydney Motorsport Park circuit, followed by an exclusive, behind-the-scenes tour of the iconic Race Control Tower.

3What Bird is That? at Plough and Harrow | Saturday 21st and 28th July

If you’ve ever found yourself asking that famous question ‘what bird is that’, here is the event for you. Join celebrated bird expert, Mark Fuller in the wilds of Sydney’s Biggest Backyard to record the birds and other wildlife that call Western Sydney Parklands home. You can attend one of two sessions from 9am to 11am on Saturday 21st or 28th July at Plough and Harrow, Cowpasture Rd, Abbotsbury. NOTE: Registrations required.

4Going Wylde Day at Cecil Park | Saturday 4th August

Get your ride on at the hugely popular Wylde Mountain Bike Trail on Saturday 4th August from 8am to 4pm. This will be an activity-packed day, including escorted coach rides (6km and 12km), jump displays, pump track skills sessions, bike health checks, celebrity riders and more.

5Spartan Workout Tour at The Dairy in Abbotsbury | Saturday 4th August

Western Sydney Parklands is hosting a special FREE Spartan Workout Tour on Saturday 4th August from 7am to 10am. It’s a warm up to the Spartan Australia Race coming to Western Sydney Parklands on 6th October 2018. Whether you’re a rookie or a veteran, this is the perfect opportunity to challenge your mind and your body, and find out what it’s like to train like a Spartan! The Spartan Workout Tour will have 6 x 20-minute workouts over the three hours, focusing on the different aspects of one of the great outdoors’ most challenging races.
