Did you know that there is a creative precinct growing in Parramatta? You’ll find a number of creative enterprises tucked away at the end of Hunter Street, close to Parramatta Park. And you’re invited to the first Parramatta Creative Precinct Open Day on Saturday 30th June. It will be a free and fun activity-packed day of creative pursuits, thanks to The Bower, Parramatta Clay & Arts Inc and Sydney Jewellery School.
Highlights of the Creative Precinct Open Day include the ParraPickers flea market, demonstrations in ceramics and jewellery making, and hands-on creative activities. And afterwards you can always take the kids for a play at Parramatta Park or grab a bite to eat at The Grounds Keeper Cafe or the Burger Project nearby.
1ParraPickers Flea Market (9am-1pm)
Western Sydney’s best flea market is back, with tonnes of stalls selling hand treasure, antiques, retro homewares and plenty more at The Bower from 9am to 1pm on Saturday 30th June. And by attending you can also pick yourself up a free ‘Second-hand doesn’t mean second best’ shopping bag thanks to Liveable Parramatta (while stocks last).
It’s FREE to register a stall for ParraPickers and sell your own wares. To book a table, message The Bower on Facebook or email. The Bower’s Reuse and Repair Centre is a second hand shop run by an environmental charity, which diverts reusable goods away from landfill. It’s a treasure trove of vintage, retro and some nearly new household goods.
2ParraClay Open Studio (10am-3pm)
Parramatta Clay & Arts Inc (Parraclay) is an artist-run cooperative offering a range of unique classes to both adults and children. During the Creative Precinct Open Day, you can pop into Parraclay and:
- help build a ceramic living room. Teachers will be building a clay living room. And visitors can furnish it by sculpting clay items such as tables, chairs, lounges, pictures and ornaments.
- watch master potters and students demonstrate throwing clay on the pottery wheel,
glazing and hand building.
- check out the gallery, with original handmade pottery items by teachers and students on
- enjoy homemade soup in an original handmade pottery bowl of your choice. And you get to keep the bowl!
3Sydney Jewellery School Open Studio (10am-3pm)
The Sydney Jewellery School is a creative studio in Parramatta with a comprehensive program of workshops on offer from beading to silversmithing. During the Creative Precinct Open Day, Sydney Jewellery School will have:
- Jewellery-making demonstrations, including chainmaille, polymer beads, wirework and metal work, from 10am to 3pm.
- Bead bracelet making for children from 11am to 1pm.
4Street Library Workshop (12pm-5pm) [BOOKED OUT]
The Bower Reuse and Repair Centre is running a ‘make your own street library’ workshop as part of ParraPickers and the Creative Precinct Open Day on 30th June 2018 from 12pm to 5pm. The cost is $70 and at the end you will have one of these great street libraries ready to decorate, plus some basic carpentry skills.
5Repair Cafe (10am-12pm) [BOOKED OUT]
The Bower runs a free Repair Cafe each month to show you how to repair your broken electrical goods and wooden furniture. Volunteer electrical technicians and timber workers will advise and assist you fix dodgy small electrical items or rickety chairs. They take time to explain the repair process to every person. And help you learn new skills and understand the benefits in repairing and reusing along the way.
Finding the Creative Precinct Open Day and ParraPickers Flea Market
The Creative Precinct Open Day is on Hunter Street, near Parramatta Park. It is about a 750m walk from Parramatta transport interchange. There is paid parking directly next door in the Hunter Street (Justice Precinct) car park.
