Seems autumn has finally decided to show up and with it lovely sunny, cooler weather and colourful leaves.

May is full of great events to keep the kids, and us, entertained. It actually has four of our favourite annual events and a new one we are looking forward to attending. So get out your calendar as you won’t want to miss these!


Top 10 Local Events – Listed in Date Order

Here are our top 10 picks of what’s on in May for families. And at the bottom, we have included all the other key events happening in May.

The National Diesel Dirt and Turf Expo returns for its 4th year. The expo has the biggest range of earth moving machinery, agricultural machinery, mowing equipment, trucks, boats, bikes. And this FREE ‘digger’ expo is perfect for CONSTRUCTION loving kids!

The Bunnings Family Fun Nights are always great, free fun. And on 9th May, the you can celebrate all things mum at your local Bunnings store. All will have a mother’s day craft and most also have face painting, petting zoo and light refreshments.

3Hawkesbury Show | 10th to 12th May

Step right up and experience a local show from Friday 10th to Sunday 12th May! From fireworks displays and wood chopping to exhilarating rides and animal shows. There’s something for everyone at the Hawkesbury Show.

Mother’s Day is that special day to show our great appreciate to our wonderful mothers. And if you are looking for something different to, how about running or walking for a great cause! Join the Mother’s Day Classic at Parramatta Park as a family and raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Plus there are lots of fun free kids activities.

The annual Fire Station Open Day is a much awaited event in our household, with two fire engine loving kids. On Saturday 18th May, you can visit fire stations across the State to get a glimpse into what it is like to be a firefighter. The list of stations participating this year is yet to be released, but most local fire stations participate. Our local in Rydalmere usually has a free BBQ, tour around the fire station, fire truck to sit in and we even got to put on a firefighter uniform last year. Plus there is a goodie bag for all the kids.

6Blacktown City Medieval Fayre | 18th and 19th May

This is one event that absolutely impressed us last year. And we left really wishing we had been going sooner and counting down to this years event! The Blacktown City Medieval Fayre is like stepping onto a movie set for the knights of the round table. It feels so authentic and is very well organised. There are combat displays, roving entertainment, bird shows and an international jousting competition. Plus food trucks, kids activities and playgrounds. And its FREE!

Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, preschools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. The book this year is the funny Alpacas with Maracas.

8Vivid Sydney | 24th May to 15th June

Over 23 nights from 24th May to 15th June, the world’s largest festival of light will paint Sydney in the colour and spectacle of Vivid Light. Now in its 11th year, Vivid Sydney will expand through Sydney CBD and make a dazzling return to our much-loved favourites.

  • Taronga Zoo: Festival favourites for the last 2 years are back along with a mob of fierce, fantastic, quirky and endearing species for Taronga Zoo’s Lights for the Wild. Unfortunately though in 2019, its only on Wednesday to Sunday.
  • Chatswood: this is a great free Vivid precinct to visit with young kids. It will have its own mini-festival of light, music, and ideas with a number of spectacular installation,like Trumpet Flowers, I DANCE WITH YOU and Cascading Harp, from 5.30pm to 10.30pm daily.
  • Darling HarbourCelebrate the art of play and the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing at Tumbalong Lights: Inclusive playSPACE in Darling Harbour from 6pm to 11pm daily.

9Mandarin Picking Season | From 25th May

Mandarin lovers rejoice, Watkins Family Farm and Fords Farm near Wiseman’s Ferry will soon have trees covered with amazing orange globes of yumminess for us to pick! Both farms open on the last weekend in May for pick your own sessions.

10Steam Ahead Kids Festival | 25th to 26th May

STEAM AHEAD is a dynamic and immersive weekend at Bungarribee Park exploring how we co-exist with nature through the lens of Science, Technology Engineering, Art and Mathematics. It’s a NEW free event at the great Bungarribee Park. And we look forward to checking the giant roving creatures, interactive installations, games, workshops, discussions and demonstrations.
