Bunnings is definitely more than a hardware store when it comes to families. It can make for a good outing with kids, particularly on a wet day, from the free play area, kids trolleys and outdoor nursery to the cafe, watching forklifts, free balloons and hand stamp on the way out. Plus, on weekends there are free kids activities and you can usually find a sausage sizzle out the front, raising funds for a local community group.
For us, a trip to a local Bunnings store can keep my little ones entertained for a good hour or two and makes shopping for hardware items a whole lot easier.
This article provides general information on what Bunnings offers families as well as a list of local kid friendly Bunnings store, with details on each store. And at the bottom is a calendar of key upcoming events at these local Bunnings stores.
Family Friendly Bunnings
Most Bunnings stores have a similar, gated playground for kids, with slight variations from store to store. They recommend that the playgrounds are best suited for kids 4-12yrs. I have found though that my 2.5yr can manage fine and may just need some help climbing up a level.
Kids D.I.Y. Workshops and Activities
Every weekend, there are free D.I.Y. workshops for kids over 5yrs at most Bunnings stores. There is a different theme each week, such as garden, woodworking, painting, mosaics and recycled wall art. Kids can make fun projects like toolboxes, toy trucks and planter boxes. Plus, there is normally free face painting before or afterwards and craft activities. Note: An adult must accompany all children and workshop numbers are limited, so it is best to book online.
A lot of Bunnings stores have a cafe inside, called Hardware Cafe. They are usually located next to the kids playgrounds and serve up hot drinks, cakes, pies, sandwiches, cold drinks and either cheap or free babycinos. Keep in mind that the cafe opening hours are less then the Bunnings store, with most opening 9am to 4pm.
Kids D.I.Y Projects for Home
On the Bunnings website, you will find heaps of project ideas for home, either for the kids to do themselves or for you to make for the kids. Each ones has an easy to follow instructional videos.
Special Family Nights
Throughout the year, Bunnings hosts family nights to coincide with special occasions, such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Easter and Christmas. They are free to attend and packed full of fun activities, kids craft, D.I.Y. Workshops and more. Check out the individual store webpages (links below) for more details.
Kid Friendly Local Bunnings Stores
Below is a list of eight Bunnings stores in and around the City of Parramatta that have a kids playground (in alphabetically order) and activities on the weekend. Seven of these also have a cafe. All the stores listed below are open Monday to Friday from 6am to 9pm, Saturday 7am to 7pm and Sunday 7am to 6pm or 7pm. All have toilets, with baby change facilities.
1BLACKTOWN – Kids Playground | Cafe | Kids Workshops and Activities | Outdoor Parking |
The kids playground at Bunnings Blacktown is a climbing tower play gym with tunnel and slides. The cafe is next door and you can keep an eye on the kids through the large windows.
Every Saturday and Sunday, there is face painting from 10am and then craft activities from 11am to 2pm in the DIY Workshop.
2CASTLE HILL – Kids Playground | Cafe | Kids Workshops and Activities | Uncover Parking | Kids Trolleys
This Bunnings is HUGE! Aside from there being two levels within the store, there are two undercover levels of parking. There is also a cafe and kids playground, which is a more spacious version of the Rydalmere one. Every weekend from 10am, there is free face painting and then different craft activities from 12pm to 3pm.
3LIDCOMBE – Kids Playground | Cafe | Kids Workshops and Activities | Outdoor Parking |
Before the Bunnings at Rydalmere opened, we used to come here a far bit. The playground is not the climbing tunnel tower type one, like most other stores. It is therefore much more suitable for younger kids. To the left of the playground is a cafe and on weekends at 10am there are DIY workshops for kids. Unfortunately at our last visit, they had run out of balloons, had no hammer stamp and no kids trolleys, plus the store was generally in need of some TLC.
4MARSDEN PARK – Kids Playground | Cafe | Kids Workshops and Activities | Outdoor Parking |
This is the now the 2nd newest Bunnings store on the list and probably the largest. There is a kids playground, cafe and DIY workshops for kids at 11am on Saturday and Sunday.
5NORTHMEAD – Kids Playground | Cafe | Kids Workshops and Activities | Undercover Parking |
The newest Bunnings store on the list, opened early November 2018. The climbing tower play gym is next to the cafe, overlooking the outdoor garden area. This store has undercover parking, has a DIY workshops area and is having family activities from 10am to 2pm on weekends.
6RYDALMERE – Kids Playground | Cafe | Kids Workshops and Activities | Outdoor Parking | Kids Trolleys |
Bunnings Rydalmere is where we most often go, being the easiest to get to traffic wise. My boys can now climb up into the play gym on their own and like that one of the enclosed tunnels goes outside into outdoor nursery. The cafe is next door and you can see the playground through large windows.
They have kids craft and face painting on weekends from 10am to 2pm. And daily activities during the school holidays from 12pm to 2pm.
7SEVEN HILLS – Kids Playground | Cafe | Kids Workshops and Activities | Undercover Parking | Kids Trolleys |
OMG – I love the undercover parking at Bunnings Seven Hills. The playground is also our favourite out of the eight local Bunnings stores. My two preschoolers are able to climb it easily and I can swing in a hammock while they play. The cafe next door is large, compared to some of the other Hardware Cafes and opens out onto the outdoor nursery. And you will be happy to know that you can get a FREE babycino with every coffee purchase.
Bunnings Seven Hills run DIY workshops for kids on the weekends from 10:30am to 3pm as well as free face painting. Unlike other stores, the DIY workshop area is on the opposite side of the store from the playground.
8VILLAWOOD – Kids Playground | Kids Workshops and Activities | Outdoor Parking |
Bunnings Villawood has a kids playground but no cafe. On weekends, there is free face painting from 10am to 11:30am and then again from 1pm to 3pm. In between, from 11:30am to 12:30pm, there are DIY workshops for kids.
