There’s something very magical about Christmas lights, particularly with kids. And we are very fortunate to have some awesome local displays!
| Top Picks | Map | Suburb Listing |
Christmas light display hunting is definitely a great night out with the kids. But only if you know where you are going! Well unless your kids are happy to be in the car for ages driving around 😉 This is where our MAP and LISTING BY SUBURB comes in VERY handy! Along with our TOP 10 PICKS of Christmas light displays to see locally with kids. Plus there are ho ho ho many fun local Christmas events to jingle along at.
Thank you to all the lovely people who spend hours decorating their homes, and a whole lot of money, for us to enjoy. Remember to bring some coins along with you as most collect donations for Westmead Children’s Hospital as part of Lights For Kids, or another worthy charity.
10 Lights of Christmas – Top Picks 2019
Before we show you our fab Google Map, we want to highlight our 10 top local Christmas light displays for families. The list focuses on lovely experiences for families with young kids. There’s a mixture of stunning individual houses and streets where a number of houses are decorated so you can wander around with the kids. Which reduces how much you have to get in and out of the car! Plus we have factored in their location when deciding on our top picks, favouring ones closer to Parramatta.
Most of the Christmas light displays turn on from the first weekend in December (1st) and the rest on the second weekend (7th/8th). We’ve been out Christmas light hunting three times now in 2019 and have updated our top picks after seeing more great lights. We’ll keep updating throughout December, so make sure to check back!
1Chauvel Street, North Ryde
The award for most number of houses decorated in a street locally would have to go to Chauvel Street in North Ryde. It’s also probably the busiest. And it’s best to park a few streets away and walk in, as otherwise you could be stuck in traffic for a while, particularly on weekends. But you are well rewarded for your efforts with so many beautifully decorated houses and fun things for the kids to see.
2Grasmere (45) and Dorset (5) Avenues in Northmead
Grasmere and Dorset Avenues are definitely the prettiest displays on a street circuit in the City of Parramatta. We particularly love the tunnels that you can walk through at Dorset Avenue – great for little ones!
We visited this magical house for the first time in 2018. But it’s been lighting up for 25 years now! It’s not over the top with lights, but instead a beautiful display of creativity and Christmas love. A few of the displays move, and the train on the house roof also pull out steam! This display is part of Light for Kids, which raises money for Westmead Children’s Hospital.
4Cumberland Road, Greystanes
There are a number of well decorated houses along Cumberland Road in Greystanes between Whalans Road and Vermon Street. Keep in mind that it’s a busy road.
5Minago Place, Castle Hill
There’s over 100,000 lights (40k just over the drive way!), snow, Santa sleigh for the kids to sit in and a Christmas photo seat. The kids will love visiting this house!
6Hillsong Church, Baulkham Hills
We were drawn to Hillsong Church to check out the lights in 2018. But it was the fun mini winter playland that put the BIG smiles on all our faces! We absolutely loved the ‘snow ball’ pit last year. Sadly it isn’t there again in 2019. But it’s been replaced with a ‘Christmas Express’, which is a short ‘train’ ride. We went on opening night this year and there was a LOT of activities and entertainment. Not sure what will be there on each night of December, but there will at least be the forest of lights, train ride and giant beautiful babble. There’s parking at Hillsong or next door at Norwest Marketown.
7Nulang Street and Calga Place, Old Toongabbie
A new entry on our top 10 picks in 2019, there are about 10 houses that have good Christmas light decorations and are all within easy walking distance of each other along Nulang Street and Calga Place.
9Sydney LDS Temple, Carlingford
The Christmas light display at Sydney LDS Temple is a nice relaxing one to visit with lots of grass to have a picnic on. There’s also a nativity scene.
1059 Oakes Road, Carlingford
Kids will love going up and down the lights tunnel and will be rewarded with the dancing, groovy Santa at the bottom end. In 2019, there’s a collection tin for the Rural Fire Service.
Other notable displays can be found at 12 Carpenter Street in Cloyton, 1 Elm Place in Constitution Hill, Pine Street in Rydalmere, 22 Brush Road in West Ryde, Gregory Street in Putney, Caledonian Avenue in Winston Hills, 28 Derby Street in Merrylands and 3 Marcel Place in Baulkham Hills. Plus, here’s a video from Blacktown City Council showing off the best Christmas light displays in the Blacktown area.

And if you really love Christmas light displays, then you should take a trip to the Hunter Valley Gardens for their amazing Christmas lights extravaganza! It opened on 8th November 2019 and it on until 26th January 2020 (closed 25th December) from 5.30pm to 10pm each night.
Christmas Lights Map
The first year we took our kids around to see the Christmas lights, I wrote down the addresses and mapped them out roughly on paper. It was such a time consuming exercise and we still drove a round in circles a fair bit! Seeing Christmas lights is now SO much easier with this handy Christmas Lights Google Map – which you can load on your phone. And we love that we’ve been approached many times by parents when out Christmas light hunting who’ve showed us our own map! xx
The Google Map shows Christmas light displays that we’ve visited in previous years, as well as ones listed on Lights for Kids this year. We regularly update the map as we become aware of more Christmas light displays. And the best bit… we have ‘graded’ the light displays so you know which ones are worth driving to and which ones are nice to drive-by.
The map has colour coded markers.
- Green = Already on
- Orange = Will start soon
- Blue = There were lights here last year. Just waiting for December to see if they’re on again
- Red= There were lights here last year, but none yet this year
We have also used icons to help work out which lights are just for driving by and which are worth getting out to look at.
- Star = Definitely one to visit, park the car and have a wander.
- Tick = Really good, definitely worth visiting if you live nearby
- Car = Worth driving by if you are in the area
- Circle = Unknown as we haven’t visited yet.
