Penrith Regional Gallery has five art workshops for kids and young adults, from fun drip painting to bringing Minecraft to life and sculpting clay bowls. Each one is suited to a different age group, with the creative program offering something for kids 3-15yrs.

Then there’s the perfect introduction to Shakespeare, thanks to The Listies and their hilarious take on Hamlet. Cheeky, clever, utterly irreverent and made especially for children, Hamlet: Prince of Skidmark is the Bard as you never imagined possible!

A must-see show for Horrible Histories fans! Don’t miss the maestros of children’s comedy, The Listies in their award-winning show, Hamlet: Prince of Skidmark. This side-splitting extravaganza shatters the fourth wall and glues it back together with turbo-charged storytelling and silliness featuring ninjas, ghosts, swords, supersonic gags and more.

Celebrate The Listies bringing their award-winning production of Hamlet: Prince of Skidmark to Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre these Winter School Holidays with The Joan’s and Penrith City Library’s fun-filled Shakespeare Time Traveller Passport jam-packed full of free and paid activities to create an adventure of a lifetime!

Participate in 3 or more activities and submit your Passport to your local Penrith City Library branch for your chance to win one of five incredible prize packs thanks to Critical Stages Touring, The Listies and Allen & Unwin. Each pack includes:

  • 1 x Ickypedia or Ickyfoodia book by The Listies (selected at random);

3Drip Paint (6-8yrs) | 29th June

Create colourful linear landscapes inspired by our current exhibition! Kids will explore mixing their own unique colour combinations before letting loose with a fun drip painting technique.

Learn to design and mix a colour palette and explore paint application techniques inspired by artist David Middlebrook. Then put these new skills to the test as you paint a desert landscape on canvas.

5Game World Ink Drawing (13-15yrs) | 1st July

Design and draw landscapes from your own inspired by everything from Minecraft to Dungeons and Dragons. Learn tips and tricks for using artists ink and felt tipped pens by looking at David Middlebrook’s monochrome ink drawings and paintings.

6Family Tour and Workshop (3yrs+) | 3rd July

A family friendly tour of our current exhibition Bird Petyarre and David Middlebrook followed by artmaking in the studio. Create a collaborative artwork as a family by exploring mark making, pattern and colour then collaging pieces together.

Adults don’t pay but must stay.

  • Suitable for: kids 3yrs+ and their family

7Clay Animal Bowls (6-8yrs & 9-12yrs) | 6th & 7th July

Draw inspiration from Gerald Lewers’ Pelican Birdbath as you sculpt your own clay bowl and decorate it with your favourite animal. There are two clay bowl workshops – one for 9-12yrs and the other 6-8yrs. Older students will explore techniques for adding detail to a clay form. While the younger students will enjoy fun introductory hands-on clay experience.

Getting to The Joan

Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre is located in the heart of Penrith, about 30mins west of Parramatta. It’s right next to Penrith City Council building and Westfield Penrith, where you’ll find parking. Plus, The Joan is a short walk through Westfield from Penrith train station.

Getting to the Penrith Regional Gallery

The Gallery is located at 86 River Road in Emu Plains, on the western side of the Nepean River. There’s street parking and a very nice river walk nearby. But it’s not walking distance from Penrith or Emu Plains train stations.
