Mini Trains | West Ryde @ Mini Trains
May 15 @ 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm

Mini Trains West Ryde is a fantastic, affordable event for all families. Based in West Ryde, just behind Coles, it isn’t too far from the Parramatta region.

West Ryde Mini Trains
Looking down from the overpass

The Sydney Live Steam Locomotive Society was formed in 1948 on its present site. They open on the third Saturday afternoon of each month from 1.30pm to around 4.30pm. DUE TO COVID, YOU MUST NOW PRE-BOOK AND SPOTS SELL OUT VERY FAST.

West Ryde Mini Trains

The information below is how the mini trains at West Ryde operated pre-covid… They have three miniature railways and offer rides on trains hauled by miniature steam locomotives. The park grounds are a popular location for children’s birthday parties or small group afternoon gatherings. For the enthusiast, it is a good spot to just lie back and watch those steam trains work hard pulling heavily loaded passenger trains.

West Ryde Mini Trains

  • They have a kiosk which sells drinks, ice cream, cakes, chips, etc.
  • Entry is $4 for adults and $2 for children. Rides are $2 each for all ages UPDATED: August 2018.
  • PLEASE NOTE: You must wear enclosed shoes in order to ride the trains.

Nurragingy Miniature Railway

  • Train rides are $18 per family group (up to 6 people).
  • All Passengers require a ticket to ride the train. Children under 3 years of age must be accompanied by a paying adult (18 years of age or older)
  • You MUST wear fully enclosed shoes to be able to ride the rails.

Nurragingy Miniature Railway

Last time we visited, there wasn’t any signage and it can be hard to find unless you know Nurragingy Reserve well. The railway is west of the water playground (which is behind the waterfall), along the green Parklands track just past the Magpie Picnic Area. We recommend going left at the roundabout when you enter Nurragingy Reserve and parking near the water playground and then walking over to the railway.

Bush School Storytime with Poppy the Possum | Central Gardens @ Central Gardens at the Bush School (near play equipment on Paton St side)
May 17 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am

We absolutely loved going along to this FREE monthly outdoor storytime (when my boys were preschoolers). Things have changed a little due to covid, including that you now need to book online.

Here is how Bush School Storytime ran when we attended. It starts at 10am with a nature craft and discovery activity.

Then there’s songs and stories and finally cuddles with Poppy the Possum at about 11am.

The Bush School Storytime is run by Cumberland Council’s Children’s Services Team. And there are now two sessions a month – 1st and 3rd Mondays from 10am to 11am at Central Gardens Nature Reserve in Merrylands.

Session 1 – First Monday of month

  • Monday 12 April 2021
  • Monday 3 May 2021
  • Monday 7 June 2021
  • Monday 5 July 2021

Session 2 – Third Monday of month

  • Monday 15 March 2021
  • Monday 19 April 2021
  • Monday 17 May 2021
  • Monday 21 June 2021

Bush School Storytime with Poppy the Possum will be cancelled in the event of wet weather.

Finding Bush School Storytime with Poppy the Possum

It’s best to park on the Paton Street side of Central Gardens Reserve in Merrylands. The Bush School is near the tennis courts, next to the large, shaded playground.

Bush School Storytime with Poppy the Possum

After the Bush School Storytime, we love visiting the native animals, swapping a book in the street library, checking out the waterfall and play in the two playgrounds.

Northmead Playmorning | Northmead Anglican Church @ Northmead Anglican Church | Northmead | New South Wales | Australia

Northmead Playmorning is an informal, church-run, community Playmorning catering for 0-5 year olds and their carers.

  • Where: Northmead Anglican Church – 6 Thomas St, Northmead
  • Cost: The cost each week is $2 per family.

This money can be put in the money tin on the table near the entrance. This money is used for resources, toys, tea/coffee, milk, etc.

What does a typical Tuesday morning look like?

  • 10 am – Welcome: Doors open and some toys will be available in the hall as we get tea or coffee and say hello to each other. If you are late, don’t panic! We know that life with small children is unpredictable and challenging. Come when you can, we still want to see you.
  • 10.15 – Circle Time: During Circle Time, we sing songs, dance and listen to stories. Circle Time is a great opportunity for children to learn from one another, so we ask that carers encourage and model good listening and participation. Circle Time is led by a member of the Playmorning team. This time will also include some songs about God and often a story from the Bible.
  • 10.35 – Free Play: Each Tuesday, play areas are set up inside and outside. Carers are encouraged to play with their children and are responsible for their supervision at all times. This playtime also provides opportunities to chat with other carers and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee. While light snacks are provided, you will need to bring food for your child (no nut products please).
  • 11.50 – Pack Away Time: While the adults are packing away, the children can enjoy a parachute game in the backyard. The games will be run by a team member and we ask that a couple of carers help out with playing them. The games will end by 12.00. If you need to leave early, we understand.

How do you communicate with us?

Each term we hand out a newsletter with key dates and information. We also make announcements during Circle Time. If you wish, you can provide your email address for updates and information. You can also find Northmead Playmorning on Facebook.

We value your comments and feedback. Please grab one of the team after Playmorning or e-mail us at [email protected]

Who is Northmead Anglican Playmorning?

Northmead Playmorning is run by volunteers from Northmead Anglican Church. We are all committed and passionate Christians. We volunteer because our love for Jesus calls us to share the good new about Jesus Christ, love our community and care for those in it. In Circle Time, we sometimes have a Bible story or song that reflects our beliefs as Christians, and at Easter and Christmas time we love to talk about Jesus and the amazing things he has done. Anybody, regardless of religious belief, is welcome at Playmorning.
