Heart of Play Draft Masterplan Community Consultation | North Parramatta @ Doyle Ground, PH Jeffery Reserve and Online

Have your say on the important Heart of Play masterplan for 7 parks in North Park! This masterplan provides the blueprint for an outdoor sporting and recreation network across seven open spaces in North Parramatta. One of the spaces, Dan Mahoney Reserve, will be remediated and upgraded as a priority due to asbestos contamination.

In July 2020, Council consulted with the community and key stakeholders and the information gathered has informed the draft master plan – an overarching plan that will guide upgrades across this area over the next 20 years. You can read the full community consultation outcomes report or download a summary in the resources section.

Now you can provide feedback on the draft master plan and the proposed actions Council has identified. The proposed actions align with four principles that were developed based on community input:

  1. A connected and accessible network of parks
  2. A welcoming place for all to play, day and night
  3. Improved spaces for active sport and recreation
  4. A healthy and sustainable environment.

Family fun days at Campbelltown Steam & Machinery Museum are run by volunteers and are an opportunity for the public to see machinery from bygone days in operation, they include working steam displays and stationary oil engines, army vehicles, tractors, farm machinery, Blacksmithing and stalls. We have vintage rides, picnic facilities, onsite hot and cold food. This event is a great day out for the whole family.

Come behind the scenes of Australia’s busiest fire and rescue service at our Open Day on Saturday 15th May. From fires, chemical spills, car crashes, natural disasters and humanitarian relief across the state, the country and even overseas – our firefighters are prepared for anything!

The Powerhouse Museum is running free STEM workshops for kids 8 to 12yrs at its Parramatta Square Community Space this autumn.⁣

Taking place on eight Saturdays from 10th April till 29th May, the workshops are bookable on arrival and run for 45 minutes. Sessions are at 11am, 12pm and 1pm, with drop-in activities available in-between workshops.

The Sydney Live Steam Locomotive Society was formed in 1948 on its present site. They open on the third Saturday afternoon of each month from 1.30pm to around 4.30pm. DUE TO COVID, YOU MUST NOW PRE-BOOK AND SPOTS SELL OUT VERY FAST.

West Ryde Mini Trains

The information below is how the mini trains at West Ryde operated pre-covid… They have three miniature railways and offer rides on trains hauled by miniature steam locomotives. The park grounds are a popular location for children’s birthday parties or small group afternoon gatherings. For the enthusiast, it is a good spot to just lie back and watch those steam trains work hard pulling heavily loaded passenger trains.

West Ryde Mini Trains

  • They have a kiosk which sells drinks, ice cream, cakes, chips, etc.
  • Entry is $4 for adults and $2 for children. Rides are $2 each for all ages UPDATED: August 2018.
  • PLEASE NOTE: You must wear enclosed shoes in order to ride the trains.

Nurragingy Miniature Railway | Doonside @ Nurragingy Reserve

After years of planning and work, Nurragingy Miniature Railway opened in November 2019. It runs on the 3rd Sunday of the month from 10am until 3:30pm.

  • Train rides are $18 per family group (up to 6 people).
  • All Passengers require a ticket to ride the train. Children under 3 years of age must be accompanied by a paying adult (18 years of age or older)
  • You MUST wear fully enclosed shoes to be able to ride the rails.

Last time we visited, there wasn’t any signage and it can be hard to find unless you know Nurragingy Reserve well. The railway is west of the water playground (which is behind the waterfall), along the green Parklands track just past the Magpie Picnic Area. We recommend going left at the roundabout when you enter Nurragingy Reserve and parking near the water playground and then walking over to the railway.

On every Sunday, Riding the Rails takes visitors on a 30min train ride around part of the former Royal Australian Navy Armament Depot, on a train once used to transport missiles, torpedoes and other WW2 munitions. With snippets of commentary from on-board tour guides, Riding the Rails takes you past buildings dating back to the 1890s, including explosives storehouses and workshops, cottages, and a wharf.

And make sure to have a play at the fab Blaxland Riverside Park while you are there!

Tickets for Riding the Rails can be purchased on the day at the Armory Visitor Centre (located near the main entrance to Newington Armory).

Archaeology unearths hidden stories from our past, much like cold case detective work brings to light the truth about past crimes.

See how it works in this exciting set of hands-on activities, where you will try your hand at some archaeological investigation and recording.

You’ll also visit a significant colonial archaeological site to discover the truth about life in a convict hospital. There you will spend time with a real archaeologist who worked on this site. You will discover how archaeologists study sites and artefacts to reveal the details of past lives.

  • This program is suitable for primary school aged children.
  • Carers may also attend, but must supervise any younger children in their care.
  • Bookings are essential.
  • Please arrive 15 minutes prior to start time, for registration.

Featuring regal pageantry from the past – Kings and Queens, Lords and Ladies and Knights in full armour. Families will experience the excitement of living history at its best. Bring a picnic or purchase your lunch and enjoy a great family day out.

Nurragingy Reserve will be transformed into a world of medieval magic on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd May 2021. Over two whole days, you can experience life as our medieval ancestors at this free family-friendly event.

  • Free camel and pony rides
